The Facts of Mold
By Sherry Levy Have you ever wondered how dangerous mold can be to you and the people around you? If so,
here is some information that will help you decide for yourself how bad the problem is and what to do about it.
Mold is a microscopic organism, present both indoors and outdoors, that grows in many different forms. Mold needs dark,
moist, cool areas; oxygen, a source of food, and a surface to grow on.
Mold varies in the severity of danger and health risks that it poses to people.
It affects individuals of all ages. However, mold is most dangerous to infants, children and expectant mothers.
Mold is most often found in homes with boiler rooms that have central heating or air conditioning systems, because these
systems create an excess amount of moisture or condensation. The heating or cooling system continually circulates mold
spores, found naturally in the air, through the duct system. When there is dust on those surfaces, mold spores can grab onto the dust particles and feed off them to grow and spread.
Most houses with mold growth previously had some kind of water damage, most commonly sewer backup, sweating
or slow-leaking pipes behind the walls. (Behind the walls is where the source of mold growth is commonly found.
Everyone knows that molds look and smell bad. But the greater threat is that of potential health problems. Mold can have
many different, dangerous effects on people, especially if they are allergic.
During the fall months, mold often is a major factor in severe allergy symptoms. Fallen leaves
are an ideal food source because they hold moisture, the key element in mold growth. An allergy
sufferer can experience such symptoms as fever, headaches, sneezing, itching watery eyes,
nosebleeds, coughing, and even worse symptoms such as skin rashes or irritation, asthma
attacks, disorientation, and permanent lung damage. Mold can possibly cause severe harm to an unborn child, R”l.
