About ADHD
ADHD or ADD is a process of brain function that tends to cause behaviors that disrupt our lives and the lives of those we interact with. This “disorder” (I prefer: “Brain Style” or ”Skill Set”) has been studied and researched for well over 200 years and as far back as 40,000+ years. Research in the past 20 yrs has made great leaps and bounds in the understanding of this Brain Style.
The term Attention Deficit Disorder has been in use since the 1960’s and described again, and very simply, young boys who were not able to pay attention in school. They often were unable to sit still in class and tended to create such distractions in class that they received the labels of disruptive, impulsive, disturbed and troublesome children.
As the identifiable traits of hyperactivity and impulsivity were emphasized the name was changed to ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder).
It wasn’t until the late 1990’s that it was realized that ADHD often follows the child into adulthood. By this time it was also apparent that ADHD was present in girls as well as boys however, girls just didn’t seem to be as disruptive as the boys.
Present day studies indicate that the traits of ADHD are seen as having an important place in the evolution of humankind. At many times in the development of the human species and their cultural and social fabric, it is noted that the genetic characteristics of the ADHD individual were those that directed the course of human event. The current trend in some ADHD treatments (and in my coaching modality as well) is to acknowledge the place of each ADHD individual in today’s society.
It is my belief that the ADHD individual is not broken, defective or disabled. We are perfect, whole and complete and just maybe ahead of our time.
